Top 10 Venice Biennale 202
People always ask what to see after I’ve been, so here are my top ten (plus recommend contxt.art as the best site to wander around with and plan!)
Li Yi-Fan @ Taiwan Pavilion next to San Marco. Video on perception and animation and technology was SO good i went back to eat every minute. Unmissable.
Still Joy @ Pinchunk Collection. Ukraine show about finding joy in war - made me cry more than once. Unmissable.
Oriol Vilanova @ Spanish Pavilion A billion vintage postcards arranged by theme and aesthetic. Couldve stayed for hours.
Ei Arakawa @ Japan Pavilion A rainbow of baby dolls, change their nappies, scan the poo, get a poem. Hilarious.
Tori Wranes @ Nordic Pavilion Funniest, most inventive sculptural experimentation of the biennial
Lorna Simpson @ Punta Della Dogana Singing bowls, supersized paintings, DIVA levels.
Canicula The third iteration of the Fondazione in between art and films shows. Esp for P Staff’s stairwell and the killer films on the ground floor.
Fondazione Dries Van Noten Blown away. Stunning installation. Comme couture next to Venetian historic jewellery. Incredible new addition to Venice.
Holy See Wander a botancial garden with headphones for a seamless Soundwalk Collective sensor led aural show with people like Laaraji and FKA Twigs. Great Alexander Kluge second show almost like the texts to the experience.
Florentina Holzinger @ Austrian Pavilion. I almost forgot to mention its so obviously good. So lucky I interviewed her last year for Cura.
Also of note: Michael Armitage @ Palazzo Grassi, Sung Tieu and Henrieke Neuman @ German Pavilion and notably Kandis Williams, Tai Shani, Meriem Bennani, and Orian Barki @ Pier Luigi Nervi Foundation Evening outdoor projection exhibition that I was lucky to chair a panel talk about (Until June 7). And the two headed word at Bregguen Fondation.
